Drupal Jobs

Drupal is a website content management system based on PHP and one of many possible database systems including MySQL, MS SQL Server, MariaDB, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB. Drupal is free and open source, and it’s highly developed and refined. It’s also extremely flexible. So, it is used on many large and small websites, including, notably, WhiteHouse.gov.

Because it’s such a robust system, many companies choose not to build their site from the ground up, but rather choose to build it with Drupal. So, there is a very high demand for people who know how to use Drupal. At its core, Drupal is written in PHP, so a good knowledge of PHP is useful for anyone wanting a Drupal job. (See the article about PHP jobs for more details about PHP.) Beyond that, there is no standard formal training for learning Drupal. The best bet is to get some good cheap web hosting somewhere, like HostGator and install Drupal and play around. There is a fantastic online community and answers to most common questions can be found doing quick Google searches.

There are a few main areas that Drupal developers are hired in. One big one, which requires only a mild amount of programming knowledge, is Drupal design. Drupal has many downloadable themes, but most big companies will want a completely unique website look. So, if you have good HTML, CSS and Photoshop skills, then you can probably learn how to write Drupal themes in a reasonable amount of time. If you want a good resume builder for Drupal theming, make a couple of themes and upload them to Drupal’s theme repositories.

A more technical area of Drupal development is module writing. Drupal has a core system, but the core system can be expanded with modules. There is a massive library of modules that can do many things written by the Drupal community, but still many websites need custom modules written. Learning how to write your own modules is a valuable skill. Again, as a resume building activity, you can write some modules and upload them to Drupal’s module repositories.

So, regardless of what you want to do with Drupal, the single biggest item for your resume will be your portfolio. If you don’t have one, it’s easy to start building one. Just get some cheap web hosting and download and install Drupal. If you need a purpose, find a local business that needs a website or a local non-profit and ask if you can do their website for cheap or free as a way to build your portfolio.
