Medical coding jobs

Can I find work from home medical coding jobs?

Medical coding is a much-hyped part of the telecommuting job world. Doctors like to do medicine, not work with insurance companies. Insurance companies like numbers, not doctor’s notes. So, someone has to take what the doctor did and turn it into codes that the insurance company likes. That’s what the medical coder does. Technically speaking, this is a great work from home job. There is nothing about the job that requires being in an office somewhere. However, as a general rule, practices, hospitals, and medical coding firms generally only hire experienced coders for remote work. If you’re new, the odds are very slim that you will be hired to work from home.

How would I get started?

So, medical coding is a field where a beginning coder must beware! There are hundreds of scam sites out there that promise to give you some sort of training that will “guarantee” you a telecommute medical coding job. They will take your money, give you a worthless ebook or other training material that is not recognized by the industry, and then leave you to your own devices. So, go to the experts! Click this link to go to the American Health Information Management Association’s page about medical coding training products.. The American Health Information Management Association is a real organization, and their materials can be trust. You can also visit the American Academy of Professional Coders’ page about training. You’ll need to learn about CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS Level II codes. The training is actual hard work, and you’ll have to spend a few years working in an office before you’re likely to land a telecommute job.
