PHP is a common web scripting language. It is typically used to create dynamic web pages that either generate content based on a database or based on user input. It was originally developed by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995 and has since developed into an extremely popular language because of its ease of use, power, and flexibility. PHP is often paired with the database system MySQL. Often web servers will run the so-called LAMP stack, where L=Linux (the operating system), A=Apache (the web server), P=PHP, and M=MySQL. PHP is used on around 20,000,000 websites at the moment, including this site!
PHP could be a relatively easy programming language for beginners, because it is relatively forgiving. For example, variables don’t have types. In many other programming languages, you must specify where a variable is a number, or text, or some other type of object. In PHP, you don’t need to specify that.
Like many high tech jobs, there are a large number of employers who do not require a degree in the field, but rather simply require proof that one is able to perform tasks well. A good place to get started may be to check a book or two out of the library or take a course from the local community college.
